This or That Thursday: Breakfast

It's THIS OR THAT Thursday! This week we are taking a look at eating breakfast at home or at Caribou Coffee.

I thought about the value of eating in rather than eating out the other day as I was talking to someone about why I choose to make certain things at home. There are many benefits to cooking at home. Including nutrition and price.

So I decided to pick the meal I have at home most consistently and compare it to one of my favorite places for breakfast, Caribou Coffee!

Breakfast At Home:

I have nearly the same exact breakfast every day. I haven't gotten sick of it so why change it?

Bagel Breakfast Sandwich with Starbucks Cold Brew:

This week's bagel sandwich includes, 1 cinnamon raisin bagel, 2 slices of deli ham, 1 whole egg, 115 grams of egg whites, 1 slice of velveeta, 12 oz. of Starbucks cold brew (I buy a jug of it) with sugar free syrup.


Calories: 407

Protein: 35 grams

Carbs: 48 grams

Fats: 8 grams


1 Bagel: 50 cents

2 Slices of Deli Ham: 62 cents

1 whole egg: 30 cents

115 grams of egg whites: 63 cents

1 slice of velveeta: 22 cents

12 oz. of Starbucks cold brew: $1.40

Total: $3.67

Breakfast At Caribou:

Although if I go to Caribou I do not always get the same breakfast sandwich for the purpose of this I went with the closest sandwich to what I eat at home.

Bacon, Egg, and Cheddar Bagel Breakfast Sandwich with a Cold Press:

This bagel sandwich includes, 1 plain bagel, 2 slices of bacon, 1 whole egg, a slice of cheddar, 12 oz. of cold brew with sugar free syrup.


Calories: 555

Protein: 23 grams

Carbs: 61 grams

Fats: 23 grams


Breakfast Sandwich: $5.79

Small Cold Press: $4.79

Total: $10.58

As you can see eating at home, you not only get more food for less calories you save a ton of money!

Total savings: $6.91

If you stopped at Caribou 3 times a week for a month you would be spending: $126.96! Just on breakfast! What could you spend that on instead?

Going through fast food might (depending on the line) save you time, but that's about it.
